What is a diabetic eye examination and why would you need one? Simply put, elevated blood sugar has an effect on various aspects of your health, including your eyes. You may not even know that you're suffering with diabetic retinopathy, the eye disease that is caused by elevated blood sugar, because there are no obvious symptoms in the early stages. However, if you notice that your vision is blurry of that you have spots in front of your eyes (floaters), you should not hesitate to be examined by our Bushwick optometrist. Along with impaired ability to distinguish colors and vision, loss, those are the most common signs. And by the time you are dealing with such clear indicators, you may already have sustained harm to your eyes or be at serious risk for doing so. Diabetes can lead to the rupturing of the blood vessels in your retinas, possibly causing blood to leak into them. The goal of our Bushwick optometrist is to catch diabetic retinopathy before any of that has occurred. When caught early, treatment and management can be put into practice to keep your eyes from harm and to avoid lost vision. The most effective approach is to get your blood sugar under control. Your primary care doctor or endocrinologist will recommend a strategy of diet, medication, and exercise designed to promote a more normal level of blood sugar. If the blood vessels in your eyes have been harmed, you will need to have laser surgery to repair them.
