It is very common for people to develop cataracts after the age of 60. At Vista Vision Optical, our
Ridgewood optometrist, Dr. David Nathanson, can examine your eyes and determine whether or not you are developing cataracts which need treatment.
When a patient has a cataract, it means that the natural lens of an eye is thickening. Cataracts can develop in one or both eyes. This thickening causes the lens to become blurred and not be able to transmit light images correctly to the retina. Cataracts can be easily seen during a comprehensive eye exam at our vision practice. It is impossible for our Ridgewood optometrist or any eye doctor to determine exactly how far a cataract will progress, or how quickly it will develop. However, most cataracts will eventually go on to cause total blindness if left untreated. The good news is that cataracts can be easily fixed during laser eye surgery which is performed on an outpatient basis. In fact, today, cataract eye surgery is one of the most common and safest eye procedures performed today. Should you have cataracts, your vision will slowly become blurred. You will find that you cannot see as well in certain lighting conditions. You will most likely have trouble seeing well enough to drive at night. You may even have trouble seeing the television, or details. In the early stages of cataracts, our optometrist may be able to simply prescribe a lens change which will have you seeing clearly again. He will then be able to monitor your cataract condition. However, eventually, a new lens prescription will not be able to clear your vision. At this point cataract surgery, will be necessary. The good news is that cataract surgery is usually performed while the patient remains perfectly comfortable using local anesthesia.
If your vision has become blurred, and you have problems seeing clearly, you may well be developing cataracts. For an appointment to see our
Ridgewood optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam, contact our office today.
