Cataracts is a progressive eye disease, typically getting worse over time. Some associate it with being older, but it can actually occur in anyone, no matter age, heredity, or medical history. Here at Vista Vision Optical, we want you to know the ways that cataracts affects your vision and what we can do about it here at our Brooklyn optometry office.
When there is a buildup of proteins on the lenses of your eyes, this is what we call cataracts. In the early stages of the disease, you may not even realize that you have it. As with many common eye conditions, it's not until it reaches a more advanced stage that you will become aware of its presence. Our Brooklyn optometry office recommends a yearly eye exam for all our valued patients so that any indications of cataracts (and other eye diseases) can be found as early as possible. Initially, you can expect to experience blurry or cloudy vision that can be corrected with a simple prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses. Periodic updates to that prescription will likely be necessary in order to keep pace with cataracts as the buildup of proteins increases. For most patients, there will come a time when the interference with the ability to see normally becomes too severe for corrective lenses to have the desired result. When that happens, you can benefit from cataract surgery, in which your eye lenses are removed and replaced with intraocular lens implants (IOLs). The good news is that the procedure is safe and effective, and gives you back clear and sharp vision at all distances.
It would be nice if there were a cure for cataracts that would just make them go away, but until and unless such a method is found, prescription lenses and eventual cataract surgery remain excellent ways to manage cataracts so that you can have an independent and productive life despite this eye disease. Call us today Brooklyn optometry office and schedule an eye exam.
