Brooklyn Optometrist
Our
Brooklyn optometrist has been diagnosing and treating eye disorders in Bushwick for over 30 years. Dr. David Nathanson and the team at Vista Vision Optical help area residents safeguard their eye health starting with comprehensive eye examinations that can detect eye disease at an early stage when treatment is most effective. The human eye is a very intricate organ that is, unfortunately, subject to many damaging conditions that can develop over time. That is why annual examinations by our doctor are so important to maintaining good eye health.
One debilitating eye condition that is often diagnosed by our
Brooklyn optometrist is cataracts. A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. Cataracts can affect one or both eyes. Cataracts usually start out small and continue to grow or worsen over time until vision can potentially be blocked altogether. Eye exams can often spot a developing cataract before the patient is even bothered by the symptoms. Most cataracts are age-related and occur in older people but there are several types that can affect younger people. It is estimated that by age 80 more than half of all Americans will either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. The lens of the eye, which focuses the light coming into the eye is made of protein and water and is arranged in a precise manner. As we age some of the protein tends to clump together causing vision to get cloudy which forms the cataract. Over time more of the protein will clump together. Symptoms of a cataract include cloudy vision, fading colors, difficulty seeing in glaring sunlight, difficulty driving at night or in the rain, a halo appearing around oncoming headlights, and frequent eyeglass prescription changes.
There are a number of tests that our
Brooklyn optometrist will perform during an eye examination to test for the presence of a cataract, even a very small one. Often our doctor will prescribe stronger vision corrections for cataract sufferers or anti-glare sunglasses, and recommend stronger lights when reading, magnifying lenses are also used. Eventually the cataract will grow to where these measures are no longer effective and the cataract begins to severely affect our patient’s everyday life. Cataracts once led to almost certain loss of vision but surgical removal of the eye’s natural lens and replacement with an artificial lens is effective in 90 percent of cases. Most patients report better vision after cataract surgery than they had originally. Early detection helps improve the management of vision with a cataract so please come into our office for a comprehensive eye examination.
