Below we've described what typical tests you can expect during a comprehensive eye exam at Vista Vision Optical in Brooklyn. Our Bushwick optometrists will review your overall eye and vision health with a number of tests, including:



Visual Acuity Test measures the sharpness of your far and near vision by determining the smallest letters you can read on a standardized chart 20 feet away, and a card held 14 inches away. The Color Deficiency Test is a brief test used to rule out color deficiencies. It involves looking at colored objects against a different or complementary colored background.

During the Cover Test you must focus on a distant object while your eyes are alternately covered. By looking at each eye’s movement, your Bushwick optometrist can identify an eye turn which could indicate conditions such as “lazy eye” or poor depth perception. Retinoscopy is often one of the first tests performed by Vista Vision Optical Eye Doctor, Dr. Nathanson. This test gives your eye doctor a general idea of whether you may need an eyeglass prescription.

Refraction is used to obtain an accurate prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses. You will look through a phoroptor/refractor and focus on an eye chart. The eye doctor will move various lenses in front of your eyes and will ask you which one makes the chart appear clearer. By trying out each lens, the doctor can determine levels of farsightedness, nearsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia and develop a prescription, if necessary. Visual Field Test is done to check your central and peripheral (or side) vision, as well as detect signs of damage to the eye from various eye diseases, like glaucoma. It allows the doctor to measure your entire scope of vision. Slit Lamp Examination is used to examine the front of your eye.  It allows the optometrist to detect changes to the eyelids, cornea, iris, and lens, which includes eyelid abnormalities, corneal degenerations and cataracts.
